To Dunedin and Brighton Beach

14th February

When Paul returned he took me out for coffee and cake on the sea front and told be about the photographer he had met on the beach and that we would try to find his gallery to see his pictures in Palmerston on the way through the town.

We drove to Shag( cormorant) Point for a lookout and saw about twenty fur seals on the rocks which were just beautiful. Despite looking for a long time for penguins we didn’t see any.

We popped into the gallery for a quick look and I decided that Paul’s pictures were much better. Upon which Paul took me for lunch at the nearby roadside cafĂ© where we both had a bacon sandwich. (he knows how to spoil me)
From Palmerston – a very strange town where people spoke a little like Texans we headed for the Otago Peninsula for the Royal Albatross Centre. We saw outside the gates of the visitor centre three albatrosses circling in swopping and waggling their feet mid-air – it was amazing to see them. The tours themselves were very pricey – starting at about fifty dollars for an hour – so we thought we would be best off spending our money elsewhere particularly as it had started to rain quite heavily and so we drove back towards Dunedin.

Albatross - just seconds before it did the hilarious foot wiggle

Dunedin was a town described in my guidebook as having a very good night life and younger crowd – from what we saw we decided to jump out of the van, grab a quick picture of the railway station and we drove straight through stopping at Brighton beach for the night and grabbing fish and chips for supper by the sea.
